Meditate - You’ll Find the Answers You Seek

As Yogi Bhajan said, “If you don’t go within, you go without.”

Many people say they want to meditate or should, but have a hard time committing. Perhaps, it’s because many of us don’t really understand what it is or how to actually do it. Often, meditation is associated with a rigorous routine of sitting quietly and forcing our mind to be clear of all thoughts. The problem is, we view meditation as a chore, goal or discipline to conquer. Instead, we need to see meditation as surrendering; it’s a way of becoming aware, getting in touch with our true selves and our higher power.

Here are some of the physical, mental, emotional and spiritual benefits of meditation:

  • Reduces stress and blood pressure

  • Boosts our immune system

  • Makes us feel happier, more relaxed and calm

  • Reduces anxiety and anger

  • Connects us to our higher selves and higher power

Life is a self-fulfilling prophecy. What you believe about life will be your experience of life - Neale Donald Walsch

We create our own reality. If this is hard to believe, think about why two people at the same event can have two totally different experiences? We give meaning to our experience. It’s not really what happens to us, rather it’s how perceive it and respond.

Meditation will help us become aware. Awareness is a state of being, and from this state, we can choose to be what we want. Since our thoughts create our reality, if we keep thinking the same old negative and limited thoughts, we are going to keep creating the same life we don’t want. Meditation will connect us to our soul and help us use all our senses, so we become aware of what kind of life we are creating.

When we have a challenge, most of us have been taught to think it through. We analyze, compare and figure out what we need to do. Next time instead of trying to figure something out, just sit with it and become aware. We truly have all the answers we need, we just have to listen.

Of course, listening isn’t always easy and that’s why meditation can be difficult. It’s hard to turn down our inner dialogue. However, there are many types of meditation. Don’t get stuck on the “right” way. Explore what works for you. Simply, you can just sit quietly, light a candle and breathe. Don’t focus on trying to calm your mind. Just watch and be aware. Focus on the flickering of the candle, your heart, or your breath, as you breathe slowly and deeply. No matter what type you try, don’t judge your thoughts, yourself or your progress. Don’t dwell on any sounds, feelings or thoughts, just let them pass by like a gentle breeze. You’re an observer.

In our society we are taught to do. We judge according to how much we’ve accomplished, learned or obtained. Remember, we are human beings, not human doings. Meditation helps us to be our true selves, and the possibilities are endless.
